What is a naming ceremony?
A naming ceremony is a wonderful opportunity for family and friends to express their hopes and dreams for their child. It is a time of joyful welcome by family and friends, and a time to consider, as adults, the values that we inherited from those who loved us.
The naming ceremony becomes a family celebration, an event for the child to discover and reflect on throughout their life. They may have no memory of the event, but they will know their arrival was celebrated.
What I do
I meet with the family to discuss the form of ceremony they wish to have. We explore thoughts and feelings about childhood and hopes for their child’s future. I have a range of music, readings and activities to choose from and lots of ideas for a celebration which is different and unique to the family, such as a picnic or excursion to a location which has special significance.
I draft out a ceremony and we work together to ensure that it suits the needs of the family as well as the audience.
